Abstract

The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of participation in antenatal classes on childbirth fear among pregnant women who applied to an Education, Research and Practice Center. The prospective case-control study was conducted between February and June 2024. The study population consisted of pregnant women attending the hospital’s childbirth education classes and obstetrics outpatient clinic. According to G*Power analysis, a total of 128 pregnant women were included, with 64 participants in each group. Data were collected using the “Pregnancy Information Form” and the “Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire Version A (W-DEQ A).” Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 27.0, and a p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. The mean W-DEQ A score of participants who attended the childbirth education class was 50.79±22.34, while that of those who did not attend was 54.39±22.00. No statistically significant difference was found between the groups (p>0.05). The findings of the study indicate that participation in childbirth education classes did not result in a significant difference in birth fear levels. However, numerous studies in the literature have shown that prenatal education reduces maternal anxiety and positively influences the childbirth experience. Therefore, it is recommended that the content, duration, and participation levels of childbirth education programs be reviewed and improved, that programs be standardized across larger samples, and that all pregnant women have access to these classes.
